YouTube Recap

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's volleyball team was able to celebrate Senior Day with a 3-0 win over Lycoming College on the final day of the Alfred Tournament in the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena on Saturday evening.

The Saxons (6-19, 3-3 Empire 8) recognized the careers of Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville), Maddison VanEtten (Harpursville, NY/Hapursville Central) and Heather D'Andrea (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) as well as their Team Manager, Diana Lang on Saturday in pre-match ceremonies.

The Saxons defeated the Warriors of Lycoming with set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 25-23. Hicks had a day as she scored 15.0 points off of 11 kills, three aces and one solo block. Hitting-wise, she hit a .304 with only four errors in her 23 attempts. Sophomore Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) led the Saxon scoring efforts with 15 kills on 26 attempts and only four errors for a whopping .423 hitting percentage. She tacked on two block assists and one ace for a match-high 17.0 points.

The rest of the Saxon scorers were D'Andrea, VanEtten and first-year Sarah Raeman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) who all had 6.0 points, Totsline with 5.0 points and first-year Stacey Sereno (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) with an ace.

Totsline led the Saxons in aces with four and she posted 33 set assists on the day. Hicks and Raeman had the match's only solo blocks.

Nearly all of the Alfred University players posted digs with junior Elisabeth Estep (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) paving the way with nine. Smith and Totsline supplemented with eight each while D'Andrea posted seven, Sereno with three and first-year Alex Taylor (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) had two. Both Hicks and Raeman added one.

The Warriors were led in by Kiannah Titus with 10.5 points on seven kills, two aces and three block assists. Taylor Johnsonbaugh and Lindsay Beck both had six digs. Titus and Emily Morris had two aces and Darci Warriner had 19 assists.

In the early match against Lynchburg College, the Saxons fell in five sets, 32-34, 25-12, 10-25, 26-24, 12-15. The first, monstrous set featured only one run of four points with no other runs beating it. The run, unfortunately, was not in favor of the host Saxons as Alfred held a 24-21 lead after a VanEtten kill (Totsline assist). The Hornets capitalized on a service error with a kill from Lindsey Lang (Lynn Walsh assist) and back-to-back aces to give them the 25-24 lead. From this point on, it was nothing but a series of one or two point runs, back and forth until the Hornets had repeat kills for the 34-32 set win.

Despite the loss, Smith, Totsline and Hicks still managed to have match-leading stats. Smith led both AU and LC with 20 kills and 23.5 points. Totsline posted yet another match with +50 assists as she finished with 51 of Alfred's 53 set assists. Hicks had three solo blocks as Lynchburg had none on the day but had 10 block assists compared to the Saxons' four.

The Saxons will next find out if they make the Empire 8 Playoffs as they travel to Nazareth College for a crossover against the hosts and Utica College on Saturday, October 21 at 11 am and 1:30 pm, respectively. Then, they round out the regular season with a tri-match at Oswego State with SUNY Poly on Saturday, October 28.
