YouTube Recap | Play of the Week

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's soccer team moved to 2-0 in the 2016 season with a 4-0 whitewashing of visiting Hilbert College Tuesday evening at Yunevich Stadium.

First-year midfielder Amanda Roberts (Amherst, NY/Amherst) had a goal and two assists and junior forward Lauren Wyant (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) netted one goal and assisted on another for the Saxons, who outshot the visitors 20-5.

Wyant opened the scoring 10 minutes into the contest, taking a pass from Roberts down the right sideline and blasting a shot from 30 yards out that went in over the outstretched hands of Hilbert keeper Jenna Catricone. Roberts scored on a penalty kick with 9:20 left in the half to put AU up 2-0. The PK was awarded the Saxons after a handball violation by a Hilbert defender.

First-year forward Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) tallied her second goal in as many games 12:33 into the second half, assisted by Wyant. The Saxons closed out the scoring at the 73:25 mark when first-year midfielder Mackenzie Mitchell (Rock Hill, NY/Moniticello) found the back of the net. Mitchell's first collegiate goal came on an assist from Roberts, her fourth helper of the young season.

AU junior goalie Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) made two saves to earn the shutout. Catricone went the distance in goal for Hilbert and stopped seven shots.

The Saxons are in action next when they host this weekend's Alfred University Kickoff Tournament. AU takes on Medaille College at 6 p.m.  Friday (Sept. 9) and plays Bard at 8 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 10). Other matchups in the four-team tournament are: Rowan University vs. Medaille at 4 p.m. Saturday, and Bard vs. Rowan at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
