Volleyball Splits On Day Two Of Cortland Tournament; Still Has Best Season Start In Over 20 Years

CORTLAND, NY -- The Alfred University women's volleyball team continued its win streak with a 3-1 win over Wells College but then fell to the hosts, SUNY Cortland in an hard-fought five sets on Saturday.

The Saxons (3-1, 0-0 Empire 8) defeated Wells 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23 in the first match of the day. They were led by first year standout Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) and her new collegiate career-high of 21 kills, four solo blocks and one assisted block for 25.5 points. Smith finished the match with a stunning, .300 attack percentage as she only had six errors on her 50 total attack attempts to go with her 21 completed ones. She also followed sophomore Elisabeth Estep's (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) 25 digs with 24 of her own.

Junior setter Aubrey Totsline (Fairport, NY/Fairport) tied her career-best in assists with 45 while also tallying two solo blocks and one helper for 3.5 points.

The Saxons proved to be one of the top teams at the tournament with their final match against the Red Dragons of Cortland. They took the hosts to five sets despite dropping the first two, 25-22, 25-15. Alfred rallied in the third and fourth sets with scores of 25-22 and a dominant 25-12 before Cortland regained balance and earned the 15-8 fifth set.

Smith had a near-replicate performance with 21 kills, one solo block, one ace and five solo blocks for another 25.5 points. In the two-day, four-match weekend, Smith was labeled an All-Tournament Team member.

The Saxons will next head to Poughkeepsie, NY for the Vassar College Tournament where they will first take on University of New England on Friday, September 9 at 6:00 pm.
