BRADFORD, PA – The Alfred University women's soccer team shut out host Pitt-Bradford Wednesday evening by the score of 3-0.
The Saxons (6-3) found the back of the net early, as first-year forward
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) assisted on a goal by junior forward
Leigha Allen (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) to give AU the 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the match.
First-year midfielder
Amanda Roberts (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was able to capitalize on a penalty kick 11 minutes into the second half to give the Saxons a 2-0 lead. Six minutes later, Riffelbach scored to put the game out of reach. Riffelbach's goal was assisted by first-year defender
Kate Christiansen (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon), who sent a free kick into thew box from midfield.
Each team had 13 shots in the match. Junior goalie
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) was stellar in goal for AU as she made five saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
Sarah Dailey took the loss in net for the Panthers, making six saves.
Alfred is in action this Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. as the Saxons open up Empire 8 Conference play against visiting Elmira College.
