ALFRED, NY – The AlfredU niversity women's soccer team defeated visiting Elmira College by the score of 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the Saxons' Empire 8 Conference opener.
The
Saxons (7-3-0, 1-0-0 Empire 8) scored nine minutes in when first-year midfielder
Amanda Roberts (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) assisted on a goal by first-year forward
Lexi Riffelbach (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) to put Alfred up 1-0.
Forward
Sara Kazerouni of the Soaring Eagles was able to find the back of the net in the 32
nd minute to tie to game up at 1-1. Later in the first half at the 39
th minute, first-year midfielder
Kate Christiansen (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) converted a penalty kick to give the Saxons the 2-1 lead going into halftime.
In the 50
th minute, Elmira's
Maddie Farrell tied the game off the feed from
Kerri Clark to tie the game up at 2-2.
In the 62
nd minute, junior forward
Leigha Allen (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) was able to find Riffelbach for her second goal and the ultimate game winner.
The Saxons had the slight advantage in shots, 13-12 but dominated in corner kicks, 8-0. Junior goalie
Sammy Jo Shanahan (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) earned the win for the Saxons as she made three saves.
Amanda Banner took the loss for the Soaring Eagles as she allowed all three goals while making three saves.
Alfred hits the road this Tuesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. as the Saxons take on host Nazareth College in Empire 8 play.
