CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team won both games played Tuesday evening on the Saxons' second day of their Spring Break trip to Florida. AU opened with a 3-1 win over Haverford before whipping Cedar Crest, 11-3, to improve 3-1 on the season.
In the opener, Haverford scored a run in the top of the second to take the early lead. AU tied the game in the bottom of the frame when senior shortstop
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) led off with a triple and, after a groundout, scored on a single by junior first baseman
Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill).The Saxons took the lead with a run in the fifth. With one out, senior second baseman
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by junior third baseman
Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Â AU scored an insurance run in the sixth when senior
Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder
Shannon Schaefer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield).Sophomore pitcher
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) improved to 1-1 with the complete-game win, scattering seven hits and striking out seven.
Against Cedar Crest, AU scored a run in the first and four in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Cedar Crest plated two in the bottom of the second and another in the third to make it 5-3 before the Saxons pulled away with a run on the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Schaefer earned her first pitching win of the year for AU, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and striking out three. Schaefer set the Falcons down in order in each of the last four frames, striking out the side in the seventh.
Freshman catcher
Lu Krawczyk (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was 2-for-2 with three walks and scored three runs, while sophomore shortstop
Haley Powers (Newark, DE/St. Georges Tech) was 2-for-4 with a two-run double and scored twice.
Thompson had a hit and four walks in five plate appearances and scored a run and junior outfielder
Hannah Lawrence (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) drove in three runs. Freshmen
Amanda Shaffer (Sandyston, NJ/Kittatinny Regional) and
Lea Georgatos (Emerson, NJ/Immaculate Conception) (run) each had a hit and drove in a run.
AU, ranked 10
th in the nation, is back in action today (Wednesday, March 9) with games against Muhlenberg (1 p.m.) and Moravian (3 p.m.)
