Saxon softball team wins two in Florida

CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team won both games played Tuesday evening on the Saxons' second day of their Spring Break trip to Florida. AU opened with a 3-1 win over Haverford before whipping Cedar Crest, 11-3, to improve 3-1 on the season.

In the opener, Haverford scored a run in the top of the second to take the early lead. AU tied the game in the bottom of the frame when senior shortstop Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) led off with a triple and, after a groundout, scored on a single by junior first baseman Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill).

The Saxons took the lead with a run in the fifth. With one out, senior second baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple by junior third baseman Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).  AU scored an insurance run in the sixth when senior Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout, and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Shannon Schaefer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield).

Sophomore pitcher Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) improved to 1-1 with the complete-game win, scattering seven hits and striking out seven.

Against Cedar Crest, AU scored a run in the first and four in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. Cedar Crest plated two in the bottom of the second and another in the third to make it 5-3 before the Saxons pulled away with a run on the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Schaefer earned her first pitching win of the year for AU, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and striking out three. Schaefer set the Falcons down in order in each of the last four frames, striking out the side in the seventh.
