CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team split two contests Wednesday afternoon on the third day of the Saxons' Spring Break trip to Florida.
AU opened with a 3-0 win over Muhlenberg, the fell by same score to Moravian. Midway through Alfred's 12-game Florida trip, the Saxons' record now stands at 4-2.
In the win over Muhlenberg, sophomore
Shannon Schaefer (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) pitched seven strong innings to earn the shutout and improve to 2-0. She allowed three hits and struck out three, setting Muhlenberg's hitters down in order in four of seven innings.
AU opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first when senior outfielder
Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) led off with a single and advanced to second on an errant throw. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman
Liz Thomspon (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).The Saxons added a run in the second when senior shortstop
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) led off with a double and moved to second on a sacrifice before coming home on a
Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) double with two outs. AU closed out the scoring with a run in the fourth, with junior outfielder
Hannah Lawrence (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) stroking a double to plate junior first baseman
Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill), who had led the inning off with a single.
Jauregui and Chiavatti each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the loss to Moravian, Alfred had six hits, but stranded eight runners. After four scoreless innings, Moravian broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth before adding a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Sophomore pitcher
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) pitched well in taking the loss for the Saxons and falling to 1-2 on the year. She allowed seven hits in six innings, tossing three 1-2-3 frames and striking out five.
Maher was 2-for-3 with a double, while senior second baseman
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.), Thompson, senior
Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) and Lawrence each had a hit.
AU plays a pair of games today (Thursday, March 10) against St. Mary's College, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
