CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Misericordia College this morning (Friday, March 11) in Florida. With the loss, AU falls to 5-4 with three games remaining on the team's 12-game Spring Break trip.
Despite limiting her opponent to four hits, AU sophomore pitcher
Kerri Keeler (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) took the loss for the Saxons, falling to 1-3 on the year.
Misericordia scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. Two walks and a groundout put runners on second and third with two outs, with the eventual winning run coming in on a wild pitch.
That was enough offense to back Misericordia pitcher Bailee Schies, who held the Saxons to just a pair of singles, by junior first baseman
Sophia Chiavatti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) and sophomore third baseman
Haley Powers (Newark, DE/St. Georges Tech).Alfred plays again this afternoon at 3 p.m. against Penn State-Behrend, then wraps up play in Florida with a pair of games Saturday: at 1 p.m. against University of Northwestern (MN) and at 5 p.m. against Anderson.
