Alfred University men’s basketball team tops Elmira in season finale

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University men's basketball team defeated visiting Empire 8 Conference foe Elmira College, 85-80, in the Saxons' season finale Saturday afternoon in the Galanis Family Arena.
 
AU (10-15, 6-10 Empire 8) held a 33-28 halftime lead, as the Saxons shot 54 percent (15-of-28) from the floor while outrebounding Elmira, 19-14. Junior forward Eric Adams (Lebanon, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led AU with eight first-half points, making four of his five field goal tries.
 
The Saxons opened the second half with an 8-2 run to lead 41-30 two minutes in, and led 57-45, with 11:35 left in regulation. Elmira closed to within seven points late, but Alfred sunk its free throws down the stretch to close out the victory.
 
Both teams shot well, with Alfred making 58 percent of its shots (29 of 50), including 40 percent (six of 15) from three-point range and 72 percent (21 of 29) from the foul line. Elmira (4-21, 2-14 E8) shot 51 percent (31 of 61) from the field, connecting on 10 of 24 shots from behind the arc (42 percent).
 
Sophomore forward Dalton Cousin (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) led four Saxons in double figures with 18 points to go with a game-high five assists. Junior guard Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) had 17 points; junior guard Julian Reinhart (Hornell, NY/Hornell) had 15 points and three assists; and Adams finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
 
Gino Leonardi netted a game-high 32 points, making13 of 22 shots, before fouling out late in the second half. Anthony Abate and Justin Ruback added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
