ALFRED, NY -- First year Alfred University women's volleyball player
Amber Smith (Penfield, NY/Webster Schroeder) has earned her second Rookie of the Week selection from the Empire 8 Athletic Conference as made official on Monday afternoon.
Smith broke her career-record in kills with 23 against SUNY Polytechnic in the Saxons' season-closer on Saturday. She finished with hitting percentage of .273 in the match and added 12 digs, one solo block and one ace. Smith earlier earned 11 kills, five block assists, seven digs and two set assists in Alfred University's win over Oswego State.
She closes out her inaugural season with leading the Saxons in points (412.5), points per set (3.93), kills (369), kills per set (3.51) and hitting percentage (.194) while being tied for second in solo blocks (9) and being third in digs (327) and digs per set (3.11). She finishes fourth on the team in block assists (31) and total blocks (40.0). Smith added 19 service aces and 18 set assists as well.
The Saxons closed out the season with a 12-17 overall record and a 3-5 Empire 8 record. Alfred University has won the most Empire 8 matches and overall matches since the 2000 season as they defeated
Hartwick College,
Utica College and
Elmira College. The 2000 team went 26-15 and 3-3 in Empire 8.
