ALFRED, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer team piled on five goals in the second half to earn their first win of the 2015 season at Yunevich Stadium in Alfred, NY Saturday evening.
Â
Despite a constant barrage of shots on goal in the first half (11) the Saxons were unable to break the 0-0 tie and gain a lead. AU's most promising chance came in the 36
th minute when sophomore
Miguel Reyes (Valencia, Venezuela/Franklinville) found some space in the corner of the eighteen and wrapped a shot around the diving Yellow Jacket keeper and off the opposite post. In addition to outshooting the Yellow Jackets, AU held the advantage in corner kicks 8-0 in the first half.
Â
Only two minutes following the half time break freshman
Alexander Tostanoski (Painted Post, NY/Corning Painted Post) ripped a shot at point blank into the opposing keeper's chest. AU's freshman defensemen
Adam Taylor (Newton, NJ/Sussex County Technical) took advantage of the rebound and found the back of the net to break the 0-0 tie. Now with the lead in hand, AU looked for some insurance.Â
Â
The first insurance goal came six minutes later by way of sophomore
Jesse Lichtman (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) when a corner kick was pushed through the box and tipped by senior
Omar Mohamed (Rochester, NY/Thomas Edison) to the feet of Lichtman who simply tapped the ball past the diving keeper. Less than two minutes later junior
Richard Lander (Newburgh, NY/Sullivan West) increased the Saxon lead once again on a PK after dribbling with precision into the box and taking a hard hit in front of the net.
Â
Over the next thirty minutes, the Saxons put three shots on goal, but were turned away by the Yellow Jacket's keeper. Finally, in the 86
th minute, sophomore
Cody Cronmiller (Livonia, NY/Livonia) broke the silence with a powerful header off a corner kick sent in by Reyes to increase the lead 4-0. Only one minute later, junior
Oumar Soumahoro (New York, NY/Martin Luther King) streaked down the sideline and crossed the ball low and hard across the goal mouth to find Reyes who buried the ball with emphasis and closed out the game, 5-0.
Â
Overall, AU edged Waynesburg in shots (43-3), shots on goal (18-0) and corner kicks (15-1).
Â
Time in goal was split between freshman keepers,
Brian Larkin-Gero (Chagrin Fall, OH/Kenston) and
Andrew Barnikel (Commack, NY/Commack). Neither keeper faced a shot on goal throughout the 90 minutes of play behind stellar defense.
Â
The Saxons (1-1-0, E8 0-0-0) look to carry the momentum into Sunday's game against Penn College at 5:30pm in Yunevich Stadium.Â
