Play of the WeekALFRED, NY—The Alfred University men's soccer team tied Oswego State Wednesday evening, 4-4, at Yunevich Stadium in Alfred, NY.
Â
The Saxons jumped out to an early lead in the 16
th minute when junior
Richard Lander (Narrowsburg, NY/Sullivan West) sent a long through ball into the box and fellow junior
Oumar Soumahoro (New York, NY/Martin Luther King) slid, toeing the ball over the charging keeper's head to grab the lead. Lander added a goal of his own eight minutes later on a penalty kick.
Â
Soon after the PK by Lander, the Lakers made a charge to get momentum back. Connor Lunduski received a pass in front of an open goal mouth from Tim Ritch and buried the shot into the back of th net. The game remained scoreless the remainder of the half, with the Saxons on top 2-1.
Â
AU took advantage of their opportunities in the second half increasing their lead and seemingly sealing the game's fate. Soumahoro netted the first goal, capitalizing on a rebounded shot from Lander. With the keeper on the ground, the forward simply tapped the ball into the open net. Just over a minute later Lander nabbed his second goal of the evening, showing technical footwork to dance through the Laker defense and ripping a hard shot on goal that could not be corralled by the opposing keeper. With only 11:03 remaining in the game, the Saxons held a 4-1 lead.
Â
In the 80
th minute Matt Massenzio buried a pentalty, in the 81
st minute Lunduski headed in his second goal of the game and in the 88
th minute Brian Torchia hopped onto the scoresheet to knot the game, 4-4, sending the game into overtime.
Â
In the first overtime, neither team mustered a solid chance. AU outshot the Lakers, 2-1. However, in the second overtime the Saxons barely missed an opportunity in the 102
nd minute. Senior
Omar Mohamed (Kakuma, Kenya/Edison Tech) ripped a free kick into the box, bouncing at the keeper's feet, giving him a struggle and hitting the cross bar back into play. Sophomore
Sam Craver (Great Fall, VA/Field School) was in on a rebound and headed the ball into the goal. However, he was called for offsides. Neither team managed a shot on goal the remainder of the game.
Â
AU held an advantage in shots (20-22), shots on goal (22-10) and corner kicks (14-9) in the game. Freshman
Brian Larkin-Gero (Chagrin, OH/Kenston) started in goal for the Saxons, playing 90 minutes and notching four saves. Sophomore
Christopher Gutierrez (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) finished out the game in overtime with 20 minutes played, allowing no goals and stopping one shot on goal.

The Saxons (4-1-1, E8 0-0-0) are off until Saturday when they travel to Rochester, NY to take on their Empire 8 rival, the St. John Fisher College Cardinals at 5PM.
