Button scores seven in 13-11 win over Medaille

BUFFALO, NY—Senior Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) led the Alfred University women's lacrosse team (2-5, E8 1-2) to a 13-11 win over Medaille College Wednesday evening, scoring seven goals in the contest.

Five Saxons scored in the close game, with sophomore Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and freshman Miranda Gilbert (Watertown, NY/Watertown) scoring two goals each.  Senior Aubrey Fry (Greenwood, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) and junior Brianna Dudick (Somers, NY/Somers) combined for a goal apiece.

AU was the first team to strike in the opening half when Button weaved her way to the goal, grabbing an unassisted score only 1:11 into the game.  Medaille answered with three straight goals to swing the advantage in its favor, 3-1.  Button would score two goals to knot the game up at three.

The Mavericks took the lead again, scoring three more times to get a slight cushion on the Saxons, 6-3.  AU grabbed a goal soon after when Wendt hooked up with Dudick for the helper.  The score marks Dudick's first of the season.

In the final minutes of the first half each team netted two goals.  Within the chaos, Fry also added her first goal of the season for the Saxons.  Going into the half the Mavericks led the Saxons, 8-6.

In the opening 5:16 of the second half Gilbert and Button rattled the cage for goals, tying the game at eight.  Medaille would score a lone goal, attempting to take a final grasp on the game.

In the end, the Saxons were too much for the Mavericks, scoring five goals in ten minutes to take a sizable lead with only 13:59 to go in the game.

With 1:04 left in the bout, Medaille looked for one final push scoring twice before the clock ran out.

Freshman Shannon Gray (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) played 60 minutes in the goal for the Saxons, making nine saves.  Seven of Gray's nine saves came in the second half to hold off the Mavericks.

The Saxons return to the field Sat. April 11, when they travel to Utica to take on the Pioneers at 1:00PM.
