ALFRED, NY—Alfred University men's lacross (6-0, 1-0) maintained their undefeated streak to open the 2015 season with an 18-2 win over the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats at Yunevich Stadium.
Â
AU was paced by senior attack
Nicolas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) with six goals and an assist. Freshman attack
Jake Lynch (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) continued his hot streak, adding onto his six goals from yesterday, with a hat trick against SUNY IT. Sophomore
John Winchell (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and junior
Tanner Morse (Corning, NY/Corning East) both added two goals each.
Â
Winchell paced the distribution of the ball for the Saxons with three assists, totaling 11 assists in two games for the attack player. Morse added two assists to his season total as well.
Â
The Saxons did not waste any time jumping out in front of the Wildcats, scoring 44 seconds into the opening faceoff when
Tanner Morse burst into the box to beat the SUNY IT goalie. He would soon add another goal, putting AU up, 2-0. Following the first quarter the Saxons were leading 3-0.
Â
In the second quarter AU went on a tear, sniping eight goals and keeping the Wildcats off the board. Winchell, Lynch, and Wood were the major contributors, putting two goals in each. Heading into the half, the Saxons were up, 11-0.
Â
Coming out of the intermission, Wood scored three more goals in the third quarter alone. Other goal scorers in the quarter were sophomore middy
Keenan Denis (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) and junior midfielder
Nolan Jessop (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili). Midway through the third quarter the Wildcats scored their first goal of the game when Neil Nembhard snuck a shot past the Saxon goalie.Â
Â
The fourth quarter saw relatively little action, with AU outscoring the Wildcats 2-1, with each team netting a man-up goal. As the final horn rang, the Saxons were on top, 18-2.
Sophomore
Jimmy Pratti (Minisink Valley, NY/Minisink Valley) won 19-22 faceoffs for the Saxons and grabbed 11 groundballs. Wood nabbed five groundballs while junior defender
Max Wilson (Menlo Park, CA/Menlo-Atherton) and Winchell both accumulated four groundballs.
Â
For the second game in row, all five Saxons goalies played, with
Drew Gardner (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) playing half the game. Gardner had three saves on three shots faced. Senior goalie
Tyler Beyor (Carthage, NY/Carthage) played nearly 15 minutes and had one save and one goal against.
Â
AU looks to keep rolling Sat. March 21, at home against Keuka College Wolfpack at 1:00PM.Â
