Box Score ALFRED, NY —
Tyler Johnson (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa), a sophomore quarterback on the Alfred University football team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Johnson was honored for his play in the Saxons' come-from-behind 34-31 non-conference win at Rensselaer on Saturday. In that game, Johnson ran for 166 yards and threw for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns as AU rallied from a 10-point third-quarter deficit.
His second touchdown toss, on an 82-yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver
Brendan Buisch (Hornell, NY/Hornell) 1:45 into the fourth frame, proved to be the game-winning score. He had a 51-yard run midway through the third that set up a 17-yard touchdown run by freshman tailback
Willie McFadden (Amityville, NY/Copiague), which drew the Saxons to within four points (31-27).
Through two games, Johnson has run for 235 yards (117.5 per game average, third in the Empire 8) on 39 attempts (6.0 yards per carry) and has completed 31 of 49 passes for 500 yards with seven TDs and no interceptions. His 196.1 passer efficiency rating leads the conference.
Alfred (2-0) opens Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 20, at noon at Buff State.
