ALFRED, NY -- Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary), a freshman guard on the Alfred University men's basketball team, has been named Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week.

Seelman was honored for his play in three conference games last week. He was instrumental in the Saxons rebounding from a loss Tuesday at Elmira with a pair of weekend home wins over Stevens and Hartwick. In a 100-88 victory over Stevens on Friday, he scored 22 points on eight-of-14 shooting; in the Saxons' 105-98 win over Hartwick on Saturday, he made 10 of 20 shots en route to a game-high 25 points. For the week, he averaged 17 points.

With the wins over Stevens and Hartwick, Alfred solidified its place in the Empire 8 standings. The Saxons are 7-3 in league play, tied for second with Nazareth. Stevens, which split the season series with Alfred, sits atop the E8 standings with a 9-3 league mark, but has played two more conference games than AU and Nazareth.

Alfred (16-5 overall), plays two conference home games this weekend -- Friday at 6 p.m. against Utica and Saturday at 2 p.m. against St. John Fisher -- before travelling to Nazareth Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Saxons wrap up the season by playing host to Empire 8 foe Ithaca on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m.
