Houghton outlasts Women’s Basketball in final minutes, 92-85

Box Score ALFRED, NY- The Alfred University women's basketball team fell to visiting Houghton College, 92-85, Tuesday evening at the McLane Center.

Despite Houghton's 54-43 lead at halftime, and 64 percent (seven-of-11) beyond the arc shooting, AU battled back from a 12-point deficit. Freshman guard Kathryn Polletta (Ossining, NY/Ossining) hit a three-pointer and converted on a layup, tying the game at 82-82 with 2:54 left in regulation. The Highlanders pulled away again in the late minutes, increasing their lead back to seven points with 0:21 left, giving them the sweep for the season.

For the game, Alfred shot 40 percent from the field, 40 percent beyond the arc, and 74 percent from the free-throw line.

Junior guard Harley Cleary (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) paced the Lady Saxons with 25 points and four assists. Polleta added 14 points, shooting five-of-eight from the field and three-for-five from the three-point line. Senior forward Sarah Federico (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Kristen Moose posted an impressive double-double of 33 points and 10 rebounds for Houghton.

AU resumes play against Utica College on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. on the road.
