Sophomore Ana Ion capped her inaugural track & field season with a podium spot in the heptathlon and qualifying for finals in the triple jump during last week’s All-Atlantic Regional Track & Field Championships at St. John Fisher College. Her top highlight was the breaking of the nine-year old school record in the heptathlon, held by Chelsea Hall ’14 set in 2012 of 3,672 points. Ion scored 3,745 points en route to a sixth place finish. She was just three points shy of the fifth place finish. Ion hit personal best times in both the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, going 29.21 in the sprint and 2:39.10 in the mid-distance event. Ion’s highest-scoring event was the high jump with a height of 1.50m for 621 points. She had the longest throw out of all heptathletes with 10.25m for 546 points. Outside of the heptathlon, Ion had mere minutes to compete in the triple jump before her flight finished up (running at the same time as the high jump) and she hit a personal best on her last attempt after faulting on both her first and second attempts and with only five seconds left in the runway. She hit a distance of 10.99m to qualify for finals, tying the eighth place finisher from Nazareth College and her 10.99m distance as well but had to settle for ninth place due to number of faults and the fact that she couldn’t make it to finals, as the heptathlon shot put was happening across the road.
