Alfred University Athletics named Matt Simon as Offensive Coordinator for the Alfred University football team ahead of the 2026 season.
Simon brings more than 40 years of coaching experience across the NFL, collegiate, and high school levels. Notably, he is one of only 10 coaches to have won both a Super Bowl (Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl XXXV – 2001) and an NCAA FBS National Championship (Washington, 1991) as a coach.
Prior to Alfred University, Simon spent the past two seasons as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Division III Ohio Northern University. Under his leadership, the Polar Bears averaged 38.8 points and more than 400 yards per game on offense.
Simon previously served as an Assistant Coach at the University of Washington from 1982–91. During his tenure, the Huskies appeared in nine bowl games over a 10-season span and earned a share of the 1991 National Championship alongside Miami. Simon was later inducted into the University of Washington Athletics Hall of Fame.
Following his time at Washington, Simon was named Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at the University of New Mexico from 1992–93. There, he coached quarterback Stoney Case, who was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft.
From 1994–97, Simon served as Head Coach at the University of North Texas. At the time, he became only the 10th African American to lead a Division I-A football program. In his first season, Simon led the Mean Green to a Southland Conference title and an NCAA I-AA playoff berth, earning Southland Conference and AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year honors.
Simon transitioned to the NFL in 1998 as a Quality Control Intern with the Denver Broncos. After one season, he joined the Baltimore Ravens as an assistant coach from 1999–2005. Working with the running backs, Simon helped the Ravens secure a Super Bowl title and playoff appearances in 2001 and 2003, including the franchise's first AFC North championship. During his tenure, he coached Jamal Lewis, who recorded the second-highest single-season rushing total in NFL history (2,066 yards) in 2003.
Simon's final NFL stop came with the San Diego Chargers, where he served as an Assistant Coach from 2007–08. He worked with Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who ranks seventh all-time with 13,684 career rushing yards.
Simon has also coached at several Division I institutions, including the University at Buffalo, University of Delaware, and University of Maryland. He has further coaching experience at the prep level with Gilmour Academy and Borger High School.
Simon earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Eastern New Mexico University and later completed his master's degree in physical education administration. He was a four-year member of the football program as a linebacker during his time at Eastern New Mexico.
