Bill Sortore served as Head Coach of men's and women's cross country at AU from 2008-15 and re-assumed that position prior to the 2017-18 academic year. In addition to transitioning over to the duties of cross country, Sortore served as the Head Coach of track & field from 2008-2017. He made his way back to AU in the fall of 2024 as the Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator.

Sortore recently was the Assistant Coach at Houghton University, having held the position since 2019. While with the Highlanders, his focus was on all of the sprinting and jumping events. Prior to his stay at Houghton, Sortore was the Head Coach of Alfred University’s cross country and track & field programs since 2008 until his departure in 2018. All of these coaching positions were held while Coach Sortore was the Physical Education Teacher at Wellsville Central School District until his retirement in 2023. He currently remains as the Swim Instructor at Wellsville Elementary.

Sortore is a veteran coach at both the high school and collegiate levels. He was an assistant track and field coach at Monroe Community College (Rochester, NY) in 1986; was an assistant indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Houghton College in 1997 and 1998; and was an assistant cross country coach at Alfred State College in 1998 and 1999.

He is also a former high school wrestling and track coach in the Wellsville Central School District, where he is a middle school physical education teacher.

Sortore is a graduate of Alfred State College in 1995, Houghton College in 1997 and earned his Master’s in 2006 from Gannon University.
