PITTSBURGH, PA — The Alfred University women's soccer team concluded its first week of competition with a 0-0 draw against Chatham University on Saturday afternoon.
"Not the result we were hoping for this weekend, but we figured out a way to keep Chatham off the scoreboard to walk away with a tie," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We have a lot of work to do moving forward."
The Saxons (0-0-2, 0-0-0 Empire 8) came out strong offensively, as
Mara Gloo (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded Alfred's first shot on goal less than two minutes into the contest. Chatham (0-1-1, 0-0-0 PAC) responded with its first shot attempt less than a minute later, but
Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland) made the save.
Mott and the Saxons' defense continued to hold off the Cougars throughout the opening half, combining to keep Chatham scoreless on three additional shots on goal. Alfred also successfully defended several corner kick opportunities to send the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
Mott came up with another save in the opening moments of the second half to keep the game deadlocked. Alfred University generated its next shot on goal in the 77th minute, when
Sidney Khuns (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) put an attempt on target that was collected by the Chatham goalkeeper.
The Saxons continued to apply pressure during the final 10 minutes, with both Khuns and
Sierra Lynch (Newfield, NY/Newfield) recording shots on goal. The Cougars' goalkeeper turned aside both attempts, while Alfred earned a late corner kick opportunity. Mott finished the second half with six saves, helping the Saxons preserve the shutout and secure the scoreless draw.
Alfred University returns to action on Tuesday, when the Saxons host Hilbert College in a non-conference matchup at 4:00 PM.
