ERIE, PA – The Alfred University softball team split a pair of non-conference road games at Penn State-Behrend on Monday evening.
The Saxons (23-13, 16-4 Empire 8) picked up a 5-0 shutout win in the first game and dropped a 3-2 loss to the Lions (25-11, 15-1 AMCC) in the nightcap.
Game One
Alfred University – 5 | Penn State-Behrend – 0
The Saxons and Lions were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when AU lit up the scoreboard with two runs.
Alexis Martinez (Anaheim, CA/Woodbridge) singled up the middle to bring home
Brielle Wark (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East). Martinez later found home plate when
Bella Mistretta (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) doubled to right field.
In the top of the sixth,
Sadie Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) scored when the Lion shortstop made a bad throw to first in an attempt to get
Paris Guzman (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe) out for the inning-ending play.
AU tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Martinez scored when Mistretta grounded out and
Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) reached home when
Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) singled through the left side.
Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) picked up the win with three strikeouts.
Ava Galvan (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe) came in for relief and struck out four batters and only gave up one hit to earn the save. [Kendall] Steward gave up only two hits.
Game Two
Alfred University – 2 | Penn State-Behrend – 3
The Saxons held a 2-0 lead after four innings of play, but PS-Behrend scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth for the comeback win.
Vidal scored in the top of the third off of a [Kendall] Steward double to left field.
Samantha Wendig (Exton, PA/Downingtown East) scored off an error by the first base player in the top of the fourth.
The Saxons will next travel to SUNY Brockport on Thursday, April 30 for a 3:00pm and 5:00pm doubleheader in Empire 8 action to close out the regular season.
