"I was proud of the fight today and the girls had fun and played well together. Hats off to the Calvin pitcher in game two, as she had our number and had some really good stuff to keep us guessing and off balance. Excited to get back home and figure some things out before conference play begins."
Game One (5 Innings)
Alfred University – 9 | University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg – 1
The Bobcats' lone run came in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on a sacrificed fly to center field. The Saxons responded when
Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) had an inside-of-the-park home run in the bottom of the first on the very first pitch, driving a shot down the left field line, up and over the third base.
Alexis Martinez (Anaheim, CA/Woodbridge) scored the next run when
Bella Mistretta (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) doubled to center field.
Ally Boulger (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) hit a sacrificed fly to center field to bring home
Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) to make it a 3-1 lead.
Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) finished the bottom of the first scoring for AU when she stole second base and was able to go to third, round and score on a throwing error by the centerfielder.
Vidal scored her second run of the game when Martinez tripled to left center field in the bottom of the second, making it a 5-1 Saxon game. She then doubled in the bottom of the fourth to left field to score Vidal again, starting another inning scoring spree. Martinez got home when Whitmyer homered to left center field, making it an 8-1 Saxon lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, looking to engage the run rule,
Sadie Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) flew out to left field, leaving an opportunity to tag up and score the walk-off run from
Eileen Hein (Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy).
Vidal and Martinez both went 3-for-3 from the plate as Vidal had three runs and one RBI while Martinez had two runs and two RBI. Whitmyer was also perfect in her plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs. The Saxons totaled four doubles, one triple and two home runs. Vidal had two RBI while both Kendall and Hein each has one.
Loretta Sorochty (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame Batavia) picked up the win with two strikeouts while only giving up two hits.
Game Two
Calvin College – 6 | Alfred University – 0
The Saxons and Knights stayed scoreless through three and a half innings until Calvin scored four in the bottom of the fourth. AU's early opportunity came in the top of the first when Vidal slid home but was tagged out by the Knights' catcher after a Mistretta double to left field. Calvin had a similar situation in the bottom of the second inning when pitcher,
Ava Galvan (Santa Fe Springs, CA/ Santa Fe) tossed a bunted ball to catcher,
Paris Guzman (Santa Fe Springs, CA/Santa Fe) to make a bases-load tagged out, keeping the scoreboard empty.
The Saxon defense put the brakes on another Knights scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third as, with a runner on third base, Galvan recorded the second out of the inning on a pop fly and then the third out was recorded with a line drive to second base,
Jovie Riley (Bakersfield, CA/Stockdale).
Calvin put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and then an additional run in each of the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
Galvan totaled three strikeouts while
Taylor Carlson (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach) had one.
The Saxons will next return north as they head to Williamsport, PA to face Lycoming College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 24 with the first game starting at 3:00pm.
