LANCASTER, PA -- The Alfred University men's rugby team started its 7s spring season with a 2-2 record in the Frostbite 7s tournament on Saturday.
"It was a great showing for our first tournament of the season," Graduate Assistant Coach
Cullen Mahoney said. "We were down to one substitution missing key players, but everyone showed a ton of heart, fighting to the last whistle. We have a lot of work to do but I'm very proud of the effort the guys have been putting in during training and this tournament is proof of the hard work paying off."
Leading the day for the Saxons was senior
Eddie Hart IV (Wilton, NY/Saratoga Springs) with five tries in four games.
Phillip Peterson III (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and
Ayomideji Israel-Akinbo (Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa/St. Andrews College) each had four tries.
Other scorers included
Zachary Cuddy (Whitman, MA/South Shore Vocational Technical) with two tries and a perfect 16-for-16 on conversions.
Ky Simson (Brooklyn, NY/Erasmus Hall) and
Joseph Bodley (Le Roy, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) each earned one try. Even
Chevon Adriaans (Paramaribo, Suriname/SGS) got in on the fun with a conversion of his own.
AU earned wins over Seton Hall and Millersville 42-7 and 42-12 respectively. The only two losses of the afternoon came against higher-level Division II schools Drexel and Rowan. Their rankings earned them a sixth place finish in the tournament.
Automatic qualifiers lie ahead for the Saxons as they next head to the Pitt Automatic Qualifier 7s Tournament in Butler, PA, on March 14 and 15.
