HAMBURG, NY - Multiple goals in both halves for the Alfred University women's soccer team led to a 4-1 win over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons (3-1-0, 0-0-0 Empire 8) finished the game with a season-high 14 shots on goal and nine corner kick opportunities against the Hawks (1-2-0, 0-0-0 AMCC).
Lina Young (North Collins, NY/North Collins) scored twice across a team-high five shots on goal.
Julia Flaitz (Arkport, NY/Arkport Central) and
Alex Ruzekowicz (Westvale, NY/West Genesee) each tallied their first goals of the fall season for Alfred University.
"It was good to come away with a win on the road today," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "It was also nice to get everyone in the game for some quality minutes."
The Saxons were forced to play from behind after the Hawks scored in the 13th minute of the opening half. Under three minutes later, Young converted on a penalty kick opportunity to equalize the game. In the 32nd minute of action, Young scored her second goal of the game to give the team their first lead of the afternoon. The defense limited Hilbert to just one shot on goal across the final 15 minutes before going into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
Alfred University set the tone to begin the second half, as an assist from Young to Flaitz extended the advantage. Just moments later, Ruzekowicz joined the scoring column for the Saxons.
Lauren Mott (Cortland, NY/Cortland) entered the game at goalie for AU following the fourth goal of the afternoon, as the defensive third did not allow a single shot attempt across the final 30 minutes of regulation.
Alfred University will next return home to face Alfred State College on Wednesday at 7:30 PM as part of the Alfred Cup.
