ALFRED, NY – Even though the match was a technical forfeit for the host, the Alfred University women's rugby team outscored SUNY Brockport, 29-7, on Sunday.
"It was a hard-fought match," Graduate Assistant
Cullen Mahoney said. "Our team kept fighting until the very end and kept the pressure on. We were dominant on both sides of the ball, making strong tackles, consistently supporting each other and running the ball hard."
Samantha Stock (Ellicottville, NY/Ellicottville Central) scored the first try of the game for the Saxons (4-1, 2-0 UNYCRC).
Aurora Berry (Perry, NY/Perry) notched AU's second try to make it a 14-0 game. After the Badgers scored their first points of the game,
Zia Oellig (Colorado Springs, CO/Fountain Valley School of Colorado) posted a try for the 19-7 advantage in favor of the Saxons.
The second half was all AU with Berry and Oellig combining for back-to-back tries.
Amelia Ren Vermeer (Des Moines, IA/Theodore Roosevelt) posted four points on two conversions.
"The amount of drive and determination I saw from our team today is only a glimpse of what we've got to offer in the future," Oellig said. "We came into the game already knowing it was a forfeit, but that never stopped a single player from putting their all on the field and making the adjustments we had talked about in practices and other games. I am incredibly proud of all the work we've put in as a team to get us to this point."
"Although we were missing players and had to forfeit, we played so hard and came through with a powerful win," Vermeer said. "It was amazing to be back on the pitch after being out last week and I can't wait to see our team grow."
The Saxons host SUNY Geneseo for Senior Day during Homecoming and Family Weekend on Sunday. The first kickoff is set for 11:00 AM.
