ALFRED, NY – A day after losing at St. John Fisher University, the Alfred University women's tennis team rebounded with a 6-1 win over SUNY Brockport on Saturday.
The match also marked Senior Day for
Claire Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Education Complex #143). Both were honored prior to the beginning of the contest.
"This was a great performance," Head Coach
Jake Fisler said. "To come off a late-night match and get right back to it, the team rebounded very well and were able to do what they needed to get a victory. This was our senior day, so I want to give a shoutout to both our seniors,
Claire and
Alina, for getting wins in doubles."
The Saxons (6-3, 3-2 Empire 8) took two of three doubles matches. Zabihailo and
Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) won 6-3 at No. 1, marking Zabihailo's 30th career doubles victory.
Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) and
Alexis Gits (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) won 6-4 at No. 3.
Becca Epping (Mitchell, IN/Bedford North Lawrence) earned the first singles victory for AU at No. 4 by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Zabihailo posted another accomplishment on Senior Day by picking up her 30th singles win. She defeated her opponent by scores of 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. At No. 2, Madsen lost in the first set 6-4 before coming back to take the next two at 6-3, 6-0. Gits registered her fifth career and second E8 win with 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Windisch played her opponent in a tiebreaker during the first set at No. 5. She came out on top for her 20th career singles victory by scores of 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
The Saxons host Nazareth University for Homecoming and Family Weekend on Friday, Oct. 3, at 3:00 PM.
