Women's Rugby Drops Three at Richmond 7's

RICHMOND, VA -- The Alfred University women's rugby team fell three times on the road during the Richmond University 7's Tournament on Sunday, dropping games to Siena College, York College of Pennsylvania and Longwood University.

The opening match of the day proved to be the closest for AU as the Saxons fell, 21-10 to the Saints of Siena. AU had a 10-0 lead going into the half as Monica Lewis (Buffalo, NY/Health Sciences Charter School) scored the first try of the day during the 6th minute of play. Allison Parnes (New Hyde Park, NY/Homeschool) followed with another score to make it a 10-point lead. Siena scored three tries in the second half and converted each one to walk away with the win.

The Saxons ended the day with a 46-0 loss to York College and a 45-0 loss to Longwood.

"We knew going into this tournament we'd be going up against some of the top teams in the country," Head Coach Dr. Nicole Bernsen said. "This was a great opportunity for us to challenge ourselves before our conference tournament next weekend. I'm proud of how we started and ended the day. We came out strong against Siena but they were able to capitalize on some small mistakes we made in the second half. Losing three tries to two is a good showing for us against an experienced team. In the second half of our Longwood match we started to battle back and had sequences of try-saving tackles. Our challenge for next weekend is to string together a full day of good performances."

Players of the Match
Zia Oellig (Colorado Springs, CO/Fountain Valley School of Colorado) for taking charge and being aggressive in contact.
"I think our performance today was a testament to the hard work and mentality we bring to every practice and game. The effort was there from start to finish, and it showed in our intensity and focus on the field, no matter what the score was at the end of the day, we all showed up to support and push each other to be the best players we could be, and prepare to do even better next time."

Monica [Lewis] for running strong and making clutch tackles.
"The team's efforts and performance in today's tournament was proof of the hard work, dedication and unity of the team. Every player gave it their all from game one to three. We walked away from each game grateful for the opportunity to play against team that have more experience than us and a setting mind that we can compete with any team when we work together. Today was just another step in the journey towards success not just the team, but for AU women's rugby."

The Saxons will next travel to Niagara University for a 7's tournament on Sunday, March 30.
