Saxons End Spring Break With Losses to #24 Gettysburg and Wittenberg

BARTOW, FL – The Alfred University softball team closed its stay in Florida with a pair of losses to #24 nationally-ranked, Gettysburg College and Wittenberg University on Friday afternoon.

The Saxons (7-3, 0-0 Empire 8) started the season with the best Spring Break winning percentage since the 2015 season when AU went 10-2 in their 12-game week. The 7-3 record (.700) is the second best in a decade of AUSB. On Friday morning, the Saxons dropped a 10-2 loss to Gettysburg before falling, 9-1 to Wittenberg.

Game One
#24 Gettysburg College – 10 | Alfred University – 2

The Bullets (12-2) scored in the opening two innings to get a comfy, 8-0 lead. The Saxons put two on the board in the top of the third inning to make it 8-2. Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) singled down the left field line to bring home Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel). Brielle Wark (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) dropped a ball over the pitcher and into center field for a single that sent Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) home.

Gettysburg scored on a single in the bottom of the inning and again in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

Remm, Whitmyer and Gatza each recorded two hits in the game.

Game Two
Alfred University – 1 | Wittenberg University – 9

Wittenberg opened the game up with a six-run top of the first. Gatza sent Remm home with a single to left center in the bottom of the inning in response. A run in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the fifth, plus a scoreless bottom of the fifth, closed out the trip for AU.

The Saxons will next return to New York, but their next games will be in Pennsylvania as they travel to Williamsport, PA to face Lycoming College in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 20 at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
