Softball Splits Day Two Games of Florida Trip

CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team split a pair of games on day two of its Spring Break trip to Florida on Monday, defeating Roger Williams College and falling to Lake Forest College.

The Saxons (3-1, 0-0 Empire 8) started the day with their third win in a row, defeating Roger Williams, 7-0, before falling to hard-hitting Lake Forest in five innings, 18-3.

Game One
Roger Williams – 0 | Alfred University – 7

Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) drove in what would go on to be the game-winning run as Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill) crossed home plate on her single. Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) followed close by to make it a 2-0 game in the top of the first inning.

Remm scored again on a single to right center field from Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) in the top of the third. Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) flew out to left field but earned the sacrificed fly as Neto crossed home plate, making it a 4-0 AU lead after four innings.

AU added another two runs in the top of the fourth inning when Remm tripled to center field, bringing home Vidal, right before she scored on an error by the catcher, despite getting under the tag and getting to the plate before the obstruction was called. Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) got the last RBI of the game when she grounded out to the shortstop, giving Brielle Wark (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) the opening to sprint home for the 7-0 lead and win at the top of the fifth inning.

The wind was intense for game one and even game two for the Saxons on Monday. The Saxon defense against Roger Williams was nearly unfazed as Vidal, Remm, Neto and Alexis Martinez (Anaheim, CA/Woodbridge) all made spectacular plays to keep the shutout win for Steward, while the rest of the Saxons also put together two double plays. Steward gave up six hits but no runs as she struck out two batters on the day.

Gatza's 3-for-4 showing with two RBI and Remm's 3-for-4 performance with three runs and one RBI led the Saxon offense.

Game Two (5 Innings)
Alfred University – 3 | Lake Forest – 18

The Saxons saw hope after one inning of play as they kept the Foresters to only one run off a home run in the top of the inning, and put up three of their own scores in the bottom. Molly Whitmyer (Enola, PA/Trinity) doubled to left field to bring home Vidal. Gatza singled to left center field to score Remm and Gatza scored when Destiny Avila (Long Beach, CA/St. Anthony) singled up the middle to retake and hold a 3-1 lead after one.

Lake Forest responded with eight runs in the top of the second and four more at the top of the third to put the game out of reach for AU. For insurance, they added five more in the top of the fifth inning.

The Saxons will next face Penn State Brandywine and Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Tuesday with game times slated for 2:45pm and 5:00pm.
