ROCHESTER, NY -- The Alfred University women's rugby team saw its first action of the season with three 10's matches at the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon.

The Saxons (0-3, 0-0 UNYCRC) lost to SUNY Geneseo, 14-0, Colgate University, 36-3 and Hamilton College, 14-7 on Sunday. "I'm extremely proud of the way we kicked off our fall season," Head Coach Dr. Nicole Bernsen said. "We had a number of new players earn their first rugby cap today. The team battled in each game and never gave up. We were able to put up a variety of points during the day. We laid a foundation to build off of and I'm excited to see how the season progresses."

Geneseo scored two tries in the first half of the first match. They would go on to be the only scores of the match as the Saxons shut them down in the second. Graduate April Pratt (Savona, NY/Campbell-Savona) put up the first points of the season as she recorded the three points in the loss to Hamilton on a penalty kick during the last play of the game. AU's first try of the season was also the first score in the final match of the day as Zia Oellig (Colorado Springs, CO/Fountain Valley School of Colorado) scored in the first half. Amelia Vermeer (Des Moines, IA/Theordore Roosevelt) hit the conversion to make it a 7-0 lead for AU. Hamilton scored in the first half to tie it up.

Hamilton managed to score after a tough goal line stand, featuring big tackles from Vermeer, as it would go on to be the game-winning score, despite the Saxons having two big breakaways in the second half.

The Saxons will next play their first in-conference 15's match on Sunday, September 15 at 1:00pm at SUNY Oneonta.
