Women's Tennis Drops Competitive Loss to Lycoming

ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University women's tennis team wrapped up their first stretch of non-conference competition with a 4-3 loss to Lycoming College on Wednesday from the Alfred University Tennis Courts.

"We were very evenly matched throughout," Head Coach Jake Fisler said. "Elizabeth Madsen showed great problem solving with a dominant performance at No. 2 singles against a tricky opponent. We have improved each match and are ready to begin conference play this weekend."

Lycoming managed to win a point from doubles play, but AU saw a competitive performance from Claire Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Averill Holland (Linwood, KS/Basehor-Linwood) from the No. 3 position, winning in 6-1 fashion. In singles action, the Saxons got their first point thanks to an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win from Elizabeth Madsen (Portland, OR/Grant) from the No. 2 spot. Both Lander and Holland rounded out their respective afternoons with singles wins, with both winning in two consecutive sets. The Saxons played well from all points in the lineup, with Allison Windisch (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) forcing a competitive third set for Alfred University.

Alfred University will next begin Empire 8 competition on the road against Russell Sage College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
