ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University softball team dropped a pair of games to open Empire 8 play at St. John Fisher University on Saturday.
Both games didn't reach the regulated seven innings as the Saxons (8-8, 0-2 Empire 8) were held scoreless, 8-0 in both games. The first game went to six innings while the nightcap went to five innings.
The Saxons and Cardinals (12-4, 2-0 Empire 8) went into the sixth inning with the hosts up 1-0 after a run scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Six unearned runs and one earned in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Fisher the walk-off win to start the day.
Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) had four strikeouts in the contest.
Game two started with an early Fisher lead but AU held close, being down 2-0 after three innings. A pair of runs for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth put them up 4-0 before three unearned runs and an earned one gave SJF the nightcap win.
Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) recorded four strikeouts in the loss while
Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) sat one batter.
The Saxons will next host Nazareth University on Sunday, April 7 at 1:00 and 3:00pm in an Empire 8 doubleheader from Harrington Field.
