Saxons Sweep Houghton in Delayed Doubleheader

HOUGHTON, NY – The Alfred University softball team piled 23 runs on Houghton University while only giving up two in 12 innings of play on Saturday evening, after rain showers pushed the Empire 8 start time back two hours.

The Saxons (22-12, 10-2 Empire 8) initiated the mercy-rule in the fifth inning of the first game against the Highlanders (10-22-1, 2-10) by scoring eight runs, making the final score 14-0 in favor of the visiting Saxons. AU then closed out the series with a 9-2 win in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the seventh and giving up the first runs of the evening in the bottom of the inning.

Game One
Alfred University – 14 | Houghton University – 0

Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) picked up the shutout win as she struck out three batters in four innings with Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) coming in to close out the game in the fifth inning, giving up no hits but walking one in the bottom of the fifth.

Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one triple, four RBI and two runs to lead the Saxons' offense while also stealing bases once. Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) added three RBI and a double with one stolen base. Alexa Woluewich (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream Central) added a triple with one RBI and run. Kody Watson (Flagstaff, AZ/Coconino) had the game's lone home run as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

Samantha Vidal (Lake Worth, FL/Forest Hill), Delaney Prather (North East, PA/North East) and Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian) joined Remm and Watson as Saxons who scored two runs each. Vidal, Prather and Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) all added an RBI. All but one of the Saxons' 14 runs were tied to an RBI as Remm scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.

Remm's first double of the game that drove in Vidal in the top of the first inning would go down as the game-winning RBI and run. Orozco caught Highlander runners stealing base twice in the game.

Game Two
Alfred University – 9 | Houghton University – 2

Kendall Steward (Kennedy, NY/Randolph) picked up the win inside of the pitching circle as she held a shutout and only gave up two hits going into the seventh inning. A two-run double prevented the shutout but was futile effort as the Saxons went on a four-run spree in the top of the seventh inning. Steward struck out Highlander batters six times.

Watson and Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) each had a home run in the game while Woluewich had her second triple of the day. Wells and Steward both had doubles while Vidal stole base twice to go with Steward and Prather's one steal each. Watson went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Wells and Prather added two RBI each. Steward crossed home plate two times.

The Saxons will next close out their Empire 8 schedule as they return to Harrington Field for Senior Day against Elmira College on Sunday, April 28 at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
