ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's rugby team wrapped up its first full 15's season with a technical win over Le Moyne College on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm incredibly proud of how the team performed today," Head Coach
Dr. Nicole Bernsen said. "This match was a culmination of all the hard work put in all season. We showed what we're capable of and the sky's the limit! We're going to miss our seniors but are excited for the future of Alfred Rugby and getting back on the pitch in the spring for 7s!"
The score officially goes down as a 30-0 win for the Saxons, but both teams decided to play 10s for the experience.
April Pratt (Savona, NY/Campbell-Savona) was the first Saxon to score a try on the afternoon.
Amelia Vermeer (Des Moines, IA/Theodore Roosevelt) drove through the conversion kick.
Pratt wouldn't be the only senior to score a try on Senior Day as
Raina Bowen (Bolivar, NY/Bolivar-Richburg Central) blasted up the middle for the Saxons' second try of the day.
Samantha Stock (Ellicottville, NY/Ellicottville Central) after recovering the ball from a Saxon scrum win, reversed momentum of the scrum by going right and fought into the try zone for the third try of the day.
Madison Smith (Alfred, NY/Rome Free Academy) capped off the scoring with a try that was followed with a Vermeer conversion kick.
An injury on a Le Moyne player called the match early as the Saxons, having begun the day with a celebration, ended on a celebration with the technical win and closing out their first, full 15s season.
Prior to first touch, AU recognized the careers of Bowen,
Monica Lewis (Buffalo, NY/Health Sciences Charter School), Pratt and
Gianna Sapienza (Crown Point, IN/Crown Point).
Player of the Match:
Cori Recktenwald (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post), Stock
Rookie of the Match: Vermeer
The Saxons will next look towards spring 7s season in 2025.
