ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University Women's Lacrosse team celebrated their seniors in their final home game, but came up short against Medaille University.
Before the game, Alfred University celebrated four seniors who will be graduating in May. Amanda Pishtey, Savannah Perham, Maddie Shaw, and Brenna Turner walked out onto the field with their families and were presented with gifts to commemorate their final game as Saxons.
The Saxons (1-12, 1-6 Empire 8) fell to the Mavericks (9-5,3-4 Empire 8) by a score of 17-5.
In her final game, Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) led the Saxons in points with a goal and an assist. Another senior, Maddie Shaw (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) netted her first goal of the season in her last game as a Saxon.
Kylee Bedette (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) added a goal and an assist. Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) and Morgan Wise (Kittanning, PA/Armstrong) both tacked on a goal each. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster) recorded 11 saves for AU.
Medaille jumped out to an early lead over Alfred to start the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter, Turner found the back of the net off of a pass from Bedette for the lone Saxon goal of the first half. After halftime, AU scored back-to-back goals from Booth and Bedette. Then, Shaw was able to end her career on a positive note as she netted a goal from a free position shot late in the third quarter.
"We kept a positive mentality all season long and showed great improvement. Disappointing that we couldn't put up more wins, but the way the team came to practice every day with the willingness to learn and be coached took us a long way. It was fun coaching them this season. We look forward to building upon this progress next year and the years to come, and ultimately getting to the point where we are competing for a championship." Head Coach Julie Decker said.
This was the final game of the season for the Alfred University Women's Lacrosse team.
