Saxons Take Two From Tigers with Mid-Game Scoring Sprees

ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University softball team is now on a five-game winning streak after sweeping Rochester Institute of Technology on the road on Tuesday, in non-conference action.

The Saxons (8-8-1, 3-1 Empire 8) won game one, 12-3 just one inning short of the scheduled seven innings of play against the Tigers (3-15-1, 0-0 Liberty League). Just the same as game one, game two was a slow scoring start for both teams before a huge scoring spree for AU started up, ending in an 11-2 Saxon victory.

"We have been hitting the very well as of late and I was proud of the girls for picking up where they left off on Saturday," Head Coach Luke Wesneski said. "We had great performances from al ot of different players today and we were pleased with the outcome. We will be ready for a tough DH tomorrow at home with Ithaca!"

Game One (Six Innings)
Alfred University – 12  |  RIT – 3

Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) had a fantastic start to the day as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run for three RBI and three runs of her own. Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) picked up her second win of the season inside of the pitching circle, striking out one batter, giving up seven hits, three earned runs and walking batters twice. In total, the Tigers only managed eight hits in 6.0 innings while the Saxons totaled 17 hits in game one.

Molly Lawson (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills) had a perfect, 3-for-3 performance at the plate with an RBI and a run while Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) also had three of the Saxons' 17 hits, going 3-for-4 with two runs and another run batted in. Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) had two RBI and two runs from one hit, Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run to round out the top batting performances. All but one of the starting batting lineup crossed home plate during game one.

AU scored first in the first inning, tacking two runs on the board when Lugo doubled to bring Wells home. Remm singled to right field right after to send Lugo across the plate for the early, 2-0 lead. RIT responded with a single in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.

Lawson doubled to right field to bring Alexa Woluewich (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) home, upping the advantage to 3-1 in the top of the second. RIT tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Neto drove in what would go on to be the game-winning run in the top of the third inning when she grounded out to the RIT shortstop, allowing speedy Lugo to cross home plate for the second time of the game.

The Saxon bats caught heat in the top of the fourth inning, adding insurance run after insurance run, starting off with Wells doubling to left center field, bringing home Isabella Carrillo (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) for the unearned score and also bringing home Lawson. Lugo cleared the bases with a home run to center field, scoring Wells from second base, making it an 8-3 Saxon lead. Neto doubled through the left side to bring Remm home and would close out the inning scoring herself off an Abigail Gatza (Burlington, ON, Canada/Assumption Catholic) single to center field.

AU needed one more run, facing a 10-3 advantage, to engage the eight-after-five, mercy rule. Gatza reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning to score Remm, making it 11-3 and then advanced to second on a wild Tiger pitch. Carrillo bunted to move Gatza from second to third, but poor handling on the throw to first allowed Gatza the time to score, making the lead, 12-3. AU closed out the game as Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) came in for relief of Perez. After an early single to left field, the next RIT batter flew out to Remm in right field. Next, Bennett struck out a batter, looking. And finally, the last play of the game was a foul pop up to Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley), who after first touch on the ball, sprung back out of her glove but was still called out when O'Toole barehanded the ball before it hit turf.

Game Two (Six Innings)
Alfred University – 11  |  RIT – 2

Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) had seven of the Saxons' 10 strikeouts in the game, only giving up three hits and two unearned runs while keeping everything else perfect inside of the circle, with no walks, wild pitches or hit-by-pitch batters. She's now 4-3 on the season after pitching for 4.0 innings on Tuesday. Bennett came in for relief for the remaining 2.0 innings, striking out three batters and giving up two hits. The Saxons were only struck out twice while totaling nine hits in game two.

Carrillo had the best batting average in game two, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Wells went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs while Neto was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Both Wells and Neto had home runs in the game while Carrillo was credited with the lone double for AU.

During the first at-bat of the nightcap, Wells homered to right center field for the early, 1-0 lead. The Tigers tied it up with a double in the bottom of the first and took their one and only lead of the day in the bottom of the third with another double, going up 2-1.

The Saxons responded with a seven-run, top of the fourth inning. Neto tied the game with a home run to left center field to start the inning. Carrillo drove home the game-winning run with her double to center field that brought O'Toole across the plate.

Ty Thomas (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) walked with bases loaded for the RBI score of Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian). Wells singled to right field to bring Carrillo home as well as Raygan Ashmore (Taft, CA/Taft Union) for the 6-2 lead. Thomas got home on a wild pitch just before Remm got on base with a bunt, beating out the throw that allowed Wells to score as AU closed out the fourth inning with an 8-2 advantage.

The Saxons scored three more in the top of the sixth as Lugo scored Wells with a single to center field. O'Toole flew out to right field that brought Lugo home and then Orozco singled to center, scoring the final run of Tuesday as Neto stepped on the plate.
