Nightcap of DH with Geneseo Ends in Tie; Saxons Drop Game One

ALFRED, NY – For the first time since 1996, an Alfred University softball game ended in a tie as the weather was too extreme to continue play in a non-conference double-header against SUNY Geneseo, with the visitors taking Game One, 10-2 in six innings on Wednesday evening from Harrington Field.

The Saxons (3-7-1, 0-0 Empire 8) and the Knights (7-6-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) were tied up after six innings of play, 3-3 before the rain and snow mixture forced an intermission, which was then determined to be unsafe to play. The last tie for AU was in 1996 during the second game of a double-header with Elmira College.

"We saw some good things today, but also some things we really need to work on," Head Coach Luke Wesneski said. "Game One definitely wasn't what we were expecting, but hats off to Geneseo for taking advantage of every pitch we missed. Something we didn't do. I appreciated the fight from our girls in game two and we had our chances but just couldn't string enough together. It was a learning opportunity and we will be better for it."

Game One
Alfred University – 2  |  SUNY Geneseo – 10

In Game One, Geneseo scored five runs in the top of the second and top of the sixth innings to earn the early-inning win, 10-2.

The Saxons struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) single to right field to bring home Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel). Geneseo responded in the top of the next inning with two runs and then a three-run home run to make it 5-1.

AU scored one more time when Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) singled to right field to bring Wells home in the bottom of the third. The Knights scored early in the sixth with a runner crossing home plate on a throw before a pair of doubles, one being a three-run double, ended the scoring efforts and ultimately, the game.

Wells and Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) were the two Saxons to record more than one hit in the game.

Game Two
Alfred University – 3  |  SUNY Geneseo – 3
The nightcap started with a pair of Knight runs in the top of the first and an additional run in the top of the second, unknowingly being the final runs scored by the visitors.

The Saxons responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Neto drove home Remm from third base when she grounded out to the short stop. Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian) brought Wells home with another ground out, this time, she full-swung and knocked the ball down, essentially like a bunt, getting thrown out at first with Wells already safe at home.

In the bottom of the fifth, AU tied the game when Wells doubled to left field to bring Flint home from second base. The run ultimately would go on to be the last score of Wednesday.

Flint and Wells, again, were the two Saxons who recorded two hits. Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) had a game-high two strikeouts inside of the circle.

The Saxons will next travel to the University of Rochester, who is receiving votes to be in the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association Division III Top-25 Poll, on Saturday, April 1 for a non-conference double-header. Game one is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
