ALTOONA, PA - Consistent scoring from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 3-1 win over Penn State Altoona on Wednesday evening from the Steven A. Adler Athletic Complex.
The Saxons (4-4, 1-1 Empire 8) finished with 23 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) scored once across a team-high three shots on goal while adding one assist.
Sophia Carretto (Canisteo, NY/Hornell) and
Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) each found the back of the net from their lone shots.
"Our mentality was to get back to the way we have been used to playing and increase our work rate," Head Coach
Craig Yanni said. "We came out a little slow in the first half, but I think we picked it up in the second half."
Alfred University remained patient in the opening minutes of the first half before a pass from Scanlan to Gilbert put the Saxons ahead 1-0 in the 20th minute. A penalty kick goal for Altoona equalized the score later in the half. Carretto clinched her second goal of the season in the closing moments of the first half, as the Saxons entered halftime with a 2-1 lead. The offense for AU came out aggressive in the second half, ripping 11 shots before an assist from
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) to Scalan extended the lead. Altoona was limited to just one shot in the second half, as the Saxons held on for the win.
"Now it's back to a tough Empire 8 game on Saturday," Yanni said. "We need to continue to work off the positives we had tonight. The coaches will continue to work on helping us get more opportunities on the offensive end."
Alfred University will next host Utica University on Saturday with the first half scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
