Women's Soccer Keeps Medaille Scoreless For First Conference Win

ALFRED, NY – A strong showing from the Alfred University women's soccer team resulted in a 2-0 victory over Medaille University on Saturday evening from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (3-2, 1-0 Empire 8) finished with 37 shots, the highest total for the team dating back to the 2008 season. The Mavericks (0-3, 0-1 Empire 8) were limited to three shots, none of which were on goal.

Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) scored twice for the Saxons across 10 shots, five of which were on goal. Kayla Silverstein (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) finished with nine shots, five of which were on goal. Abby Scanlan (Albion, NY/Charles D'Amico) was credited with four shots along with one assist.

"It's always nice to get a conference win," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. "We played a good second half to secure the win. Defensively, I think we did a good job limiting their chances."

The Saxons offense put pressure on the Mavericks early, putting across eight shots before Solly scored her first goal in the 22nd minute to give AU a 1-0 advantage. The defense for Alfred University was successful against two shots from Medaille in the first half as they carried a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, a pass from Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central) to Scanlan eventually was moved forward to Solly, who found the back of the net for her second goal of the night. The Saxons attempted to capitalize on their lead, with 10 different players attempting a shot before the final horn.

"We must continue to work on things in the midfield and in our offensive third to create more chances," Yanni said. "We are slowly getting to where we need to be. Both the coaching staff and the players will continue to put in the work to put us in a better position to have more success on the offensive end."

Alfred University will next travel to King's College on Wednesday with the first half slated to begin at 4:00PM.
