ALFRED, NY - A contested non-conference matchup for the Alfred University women's tennis team resulted in a 6-2 win over Penn State Behrend on Friday afternoon from the William T. Brown Tennis Courts.
"Today was not the prettiest win of all time, but I'm proud of the fight in our team and the fact that they pieced it together for another win," Head Coach
Jordan Crouch said. "The team is as confident as can be and I'm thrilled to take that into the heart of our schedule starting tomorrow against Utica. Go Saxons!"
The Saxons set the tone early in doubles play, as
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and
Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) won in 8-4 fashion from the top spot.
Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/Iroquois) and
Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) followed up with an 8-2 victory from No. 2. AU rounded out doubles action with a back-and-forth 8-6 victory for
Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and
Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) from No. 3.
In singles, Youngberg fought to clinch the first point for AU, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 from No. 4. Liu ultimately clinched the winning point for the Saxons, winning from No. 2 in 7-5, 7-5 fashion. Call picked up her second win of the afternoon, 6-0, 6-1, to conclude the afternoon for Alfred University.
The Saxons will next begin the Empire 8 portion of their schedule when they travel to face Utica University on Saturday with matches scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
