Saxons Exit NCAA Tournament After 10-0 Loss to #3 Nationally-Ranked Eastern Connecticut

UNION, NJ – The Alfred University softball team exited the NCAA Division III Union Regional Tournament on Sunday morning after a five-inning, 10-0 loss to No. 1 seeded and #3 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University.

"The season didn't end the way we had hoped, but what a ride it was. We battled through adversity and never complained about it, just went about our business and showed up for work everyday," Head Coach Luke Wesneski said. "This group of seniors is so special in so many ways. They have set the bar high for our talented and tough underclassmen and our incoming classes! We hung in there as long a we could today against the #3 team in the country, but it just wasn't meant to be. I want to thank all of my coaches, support staff, parents and biggest fans for being the absolute best people a coach could have! Looking forward to 2023!"

The Saxons (26-16) and the Warriors (39-5) were locked in a 1-0 lead for East. Conn. at the end of four innings of play before the designated visitors put nine runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning. The Warriors' first run was scored in the top of the third.

Alyssa Guitron (San Bernardino, CA/Cajon) registered the only base hit for AU with a single to center field before Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) sac-bunted her to second base. Both Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) and Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) got on base due to base-on-balls.

Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) was credited with the loss, striking out a game-high-tying four batters. Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) added one K to the Saxons' defensive effort.

The Saxons wrap up their 16th season in a row with a winning record.
