ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team competed in their final home game of the regular season in a 22-1 loss to St. John Fisher College on Wednesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.
The Saxons (2-11, 0-5 Empire 8) faced 32 shots on goal, while forcing the Cardinals (8-7, 6-0 Empire 8) to 16 turnovers.
Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) recorded 10 saves for AU, bringing her total to a program-high 192 saves this season. Across Alfred University's 13 games during the spring season, Piechota has recorded 10 or more saves in 11 contests. To this point in her collegiate career, Piechota is averaging 15 saves per game with the Saxons.
Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) finished with two shots, tying the single-season program record with 116 shots. This spring, Booth is leading the Empire 8 with 8.92 shots per game.
"We have kept the growth mindset through the whole season," Head Coach
Johanna McCormick said. "When I reflect over the last several years at Alfred, I am reminded of how far we've come. We have scored at our highest rate since the 2013 season, while individual players have been supported by their team to break school records. Amelia has broken records such as most draw controls in a game, most shots in a game, and it now tied for most shots in a season. She leads the Empire 8 in goals, points, and shots per game. Brenna holds the record for most goals in a game and most points in a game, which led to national recognition. Alyssa has accomplished the most ground balls in a single game and now holds the record for most saves in a single season. She also has the most Empire 8 weekly awards. None of these players would be able to achieve any of that success if they didn't have the support and dedication of their team."
"Our record does not reflect who or what we are," McCormick said. "Every practice, they are striving and fighting to be better lacrosse players. Every member of this team plays a vital role in achieving what we have this year. They play for each other and believe anything is possible. In my 15 years of coaching this team, the thing will always standout to me is havig the most heart, dedication, grit and tenacity. They have NEVER quit!"
The lone goal for Alfred University came in the fourth quarter, as
Madeline Shaw (Williamsville, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) found an opening to get the Saxons on the scoreboard.
"With one game left in our season, we will continue to work hard to correct the things that need to be corrected and focus on the things we can control," McCormick said. "We hope to end the season on a high note with one final win."
Alfred University will next conclude their regular season when they travel to face Keuka College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
