CLERMONT, FL – The Alfred University softball team swept the competition on its second day of Spring Break, defeating both Otterbein University and Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Saxons (2-1, 0-0 Empire 8) started the day with a 5-1 win over Otterbein and followed the game with a 7-2 win over the Bears of BSU. "The pitching staff did a phenomenal job today working together as a unit," Graduate Assistant Coach
Julie Graf said. "They each bring something different to the table, and it was exciting to see how effective they can be at keeping offensives off balance. Our defense was solid behind them and our offense provided plenty of run support to get two solid wins. Overall a solid day for the Saxons!"
Game One:
Tatiana Mejia (North Hills, CA/John F. Kennedy) was credited with the game-winning drive during the bottom of the first inning, driving
Alyssa Guitron (San Bernardino, CA/Cajon) in from second base. Guitron got the Saxons on the board first when she hit a double to center field to score
Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) from first base. The Cardinals scored on an unearned run in the top of the second as the Saxon defense would go on to keep them from crossing home for the remainder of the game.
Guitron and Mejia both had another RBI in the bottom of the second inning as Guitron singled up the middle to bring home
Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) and Mejia scored
Molly Lawson on her own single up the middle.
Lugo closed out the scoring efforts with a double to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning, bringing
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley), ending the game scoring with a Saxon, 5-1 advantage.
Guitron led the offense with a 2-for-4 plate performance, totaling two RBI and crossing home plate once. Mejia was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Lugo was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Mikala Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) picked up her first win of the season as she struck out four batters with the unearned run occurring during her time in the circle.
Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) came in for relief for the final 3.0 innings, striking out four batters herself.
Game Two:
Just like the first game, AU scored the game-winning run in their first inning of scoring as the Saxons put three across home plate in the top of the second inning.
Isabella Carrillo (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) was walked with bases loaded to push O'Toole home for the 1-0 lead. Lugo hit a single to left field that brought
Raygan Wescott (Taft, CA/Taft Union) and
Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) home with Flint's run ultimately becoming the game-winning run.
Bridgewater responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning before the Saxon bats and defense shut down the Bears' initiatives.
Wescott drove home
Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) in the top of the third inning, making it a 4-2 lead for AU. The Saxons capped off the day with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Wells, O'Toole and Wescott all had RBI in the inning with Lugo, Guitron and Wells crossing home plate.
In terms of base-running, Lugo led the charge with four stolen bases in the game while Wells and Wescott tacked on one each.
Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) picked up the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings with two strikeouts.
The Saxons will next play SUNY Potsdam at 4:15pm and Messiah University at 6:30pm on Tuesday, March 8.
