Softball Finishes Second Pennsylvania Trip with Split at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Alfred University softball team completed its second road double-header in Pennsylvania with another split, winning the second game against Wilkes University on Friday evening.

The Saxons (5-6, 0-0 Empire 8) dropped the opening game, 2-1 while rebounding in the second to get the shutout, 4-0 win over the Colonels (7-5, 0-0 MAC), similar to Tuesday's PA trip to Lycoming College, dropping the first game and picking up a solid, nightcap win.

Game One
Alfred University – 1  |  Wilkes University – 2

The Saxons scored first in the top of the second when Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) hit a grounder to the short stop, allowing Tatiana Mejia (North Hills, CA/John F. Kennedy) the opening to cross home plate. Neto was out on the play but earned the RBI. Mejia got on base as the first batter of the inning, driving a ball down the left field line to get all the way to second base. Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) put down a sacrificed bunt to push Mejia to third base, setting up the scoring play.

The Colonels pulled ahead with a fifth inning, two RBI double. Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) was the lone Saxon to get on base in the top of the seventh for AU's last chance of scoring before a third out, right field flyout closed out the game. Hatch also got the start in the circle, striking out six batters in the loss.

Game Two
Alfred University – 4  |  Wilkes University – 0

Much like Tuesday's double-header, the Saxon bats came alive to pick up the 4-0 win. AU's offense had six hits in the nightcap while the defense only allowed four hits on the entire evening with two hits in both games.

Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) was credited with the game-winning run off of a game-winning double from Alyssa Guitron (San Bernardino, CA/Cajon) in the top of the first inning after only seven pitches. Lugo, on the second pitch, singled up the middle and then stole second base. Facing a 2-2 count, Guitron doubled down the left field line to bring home Lugo. Guitron closed out the inning with crossing home plate off a throwing error from Wilkes's second baseman after an attempt to catch Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) who stole second base.

Wells brought Lugo home in the top of the third for the 3-0 lead. Lugo closed out scoring in the top of the seventh inning as she got home on a two-out situation where the Colonels' centerfielder dropped a flyball from Darby McEnery (Corona, CA/Norco). Lugo led the way with three of the Saxons' hits in the nightcap, scoring three times and adding two stolen bases to her career stats.

Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) picked up her third win with striking out two batters.

The Saxons will next have another non-conference double-header on the road and their first games in New York as they travel to SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, March 29.
