Women's Lacrosse Drops Home-Opener to Grove City, 14-5

ALFRED, NY - A quick offensive start for the Alfred University women's lacrosse team was not enough, as they came up short to Grove City College, 15-4, on Tuesday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (2-1) finished 11-of-19 on their clear attempts, while forcing the Wolverines (4-1) to 29 turnovers.

Amelia Booth (Staatsburg, NY/FDR) led the Saxons with three goals across eight shots. Hailey Stroh (Houghton, NY/Homeschool) and Brenna Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) each scored one goal. Alyssa Piechota (Webster, NY/Webster) recorded 20 saves for AU.

"It was great to finally be home and have our first game at home," Head Coach Johanna McCormick said. "Grove City was a great competitor and we learned a lot during the game. The score is not a reflection on the progress the team has made thus far. In the third quarter, we were able to match them for goals and continue to keep the intensity and focus up to the last second of the fourth quarter."

Turner set the tone for the Saxons in the opening moments, scoring within the first minute of action. Stroh scored for Alfred University moments later to extend the early lead. The Wolverines scored six consecutive goals before carrying a 6-2 lead entering the second quarter. Grove City scored four more times in the second quarter to lead 10-2 going into the break.

Two additional goals for the Wolverines was answered by Booth's first goal of the game in the third quarter. An assist from Shaelyn McClaughry (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) to Booth cut the deficit, as the Saxons trailed 12-4 at the end of the third quarter. A free position goal for Booth in the fourth quarter was answered by two goals for the Wolverines, as they erased any shot at a Saxons comeback.

"We need to focus on our fundamentals and work on our transition," McCormick said. "Collectively, we worked well as a team and worked hard for one another. We will continue to keep a growth mindset into the next game against Chatham."

Alfred University will next travel to play Chatham University on Saturday at 5:30 PM.
