FREDONIA, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team flew by Fredonia and had a close head-to-head loss to University of Rochester in a tri-meet at Fredonia on Saturday.
They Saxons defeated the Blue Devils, 230-48 and dropped a 189.5-106.5 decision to the Yellowjackets on Saturday. "We had many close races today and we put up a great effort against U of R. It is nice to come out of this meet with a split," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "We have been training pretty hard lately and I am encouraged by our results as we shift our focus toward the big mid-season invitational in three weeks."
Two of the three Saxon 200-yard medley relay teams placed higher than Fredonia's one team to start the day, posting times of 1:44.19 and 1:45.71, respectively.
Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) picked up the first individual win of the day over Fredonia with a time of 1:52.88.
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/St. Andrew's) and
Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) finished two-three against the Yellowjackets in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming times of 1:02.07 and 1:03.86, respectively.
Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) got the first win over both opponents on Saturday. He swam a 2:01.84 in the 200-yard butterfly, defeating the rest of the pool by almost six seconds while his brother nearly won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.01, falling behind Rochester's top time of 22.05. Fernando continued to impress in the lanes as he was edged out of first place overall in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.56, dropping to the Yellowjackets' top time of 49.29 but edging their second-best time of 49.80. Alessandro was right behind his brother in the race with a time of 50.17.
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne) picked up a second place to Rochester and a first place over Fredonia in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming a time of 2:01.58 to lead
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) in a one-two finish over the Blue Devils. Volaski swam a 2:01.73.
Terrazas bested the entire pool by over four seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.53 on Saturday for his first win over both schools.
Jordan Fixsen (Fairport, NY/Penfield) finished second to Rochester but bested Fredonia in the 500-yard freestyle with their time of 5:19.39. Fernando had the only tie on the day (hence the .5 in the points between AU and U of R), tying for first place with a time of 52.98 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Terrazas picked up a win over Fredonia in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.23, finishing second overall by less than 0.3 seconds.
The Saxons will next look towards competing in a three-day meet at Ithaca College, starting Friday, December 2 at 5:00pm.
