ALFRED, NY – The Empire 8 Athletic Conference named
Phillip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) of the Alfred University men's swimming & diving team the Men's Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Volaski helped the Saxons defeat the defending Empire 8 Champions, Nazareth College in dual-meet action. Volaski had two individual wins and teamed up to help AU go 1-2 in the 200-medley relay. He led teammate
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/St. Andrew's) in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.50, winning the event by 0.09 as the two defeated the rest of the pool by almost eight seconds. Volaski clocked a time of 56.79 in the 100-yard backstroke to pick up another win as he bested the other lanes by almost four seconds.
To start Friday's meet, Volaski teamed with
Wade LaMastus (Maumee, OH/ Anthony Wayne),
Giuseppe Piede (Dunellen, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and
R.J. Zellner (Wallingford, CT/Mark T. Sheehan) as the AU B-team in the 200-medley relay. They finished behind the Saxon A-team but reached the wall before the Nazareth A-team, combining for a time of 1:44.20, besting the Naz team's time of 1:47.29.
Volaski was also one of two Saxons of the Week on Monday, being joined by
McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) from the women's cross country team.
The Saxons will next head to Bradford, PA to square off against University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Thursday, November 3 at 5:00pm.
