ALFRED, NY – The Empire 8 has named Alfred University's
Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) the Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week on Monday in an official announcement by Associate Commissioner,
Joe Venniro.
Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's) earned the honor twice this season to go along with Lagos. Picking up the third weekly award now ties the program record since nominations began in the 2010-11 season. Tying the 2014-15 year.
Lagos had a standout weekend in a simultaneous tri-meet against University of Rochester and Fredonia. He had two overall wins and another relay win over Fredonia while scoring points in yet another individual event. His first win was in the 200-yard butterfly, defeating the entire pool by over six seconds, swimming a 2:01.88. Then, he followed up with a 49.00 win in the 100-yard freestyle. Lagos finished second over Fredonia and third against University of Rochester in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming a 53.36. In his final event of the day, Lagos teamed with
Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA/St. Martin's Episcopal), Andrew Yates (Naples, NY/Naples) and
Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) for a 1:30.47 win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The Saxons will next make preparations to compete in the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. The three-day invitational will begin on Friday, December 3 at 5:00pm with Saturday and Sunday events beginning at 10:00am each day.
