ROCHESTER, NY – The Alfred University men's swimming & diving team was narrowly defeated by University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, 155-128 while picking up a 205-51 win over Fredonia at the same time.
The Saxons picked up their first win of the day in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.94. The team of
William LaMastus (Maumee, OH/Anthony Wayne), Emiliano Terrazas (La Paz, Bolivia/Saint Andrew's), Colby Watkins (New Orleans, LA/St. Martin's Episcopal) and
Paul Tuttle (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) almost earned two wins for the price of one as U. of R's tope team finished with a time of 1:37.20.
A few events later, William won over Fredonia again with a time of 54.01 in the 100-yard backstroke, as the Yellowjackets escaped another Saxon victory with a top time of 53.82. AU earned the one-two-three finish over Fredonia in that race as
Philip Volaski (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and
Nathan Sponenberg (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) out-performed the Blue Devils in the pool.
Immediately following the backstroke, the 100-yard breaststroke Saxon competitors went one-two-three against Fredonia as Terrazas led
Justin Jarmer (Flagstaff, AZ/Northland Preparatory Academy) and
Colin Schultz (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) with a time of 59.71. Once again, U. of R stayed undefeated on the day with a close finish, winning with a 59.14…but that was soon to change.
Fernando Lagos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) and Watkins went one-two in the 200-yard butterfly over both Rochester and Fredonia. Lagos swam a dominant 2:01.88 while Watkins edged out the hopes of Rochester's top time of 2:07.60. A few moments later, Lagos did it again with a time of 49.00 in the 100-yard freestyle, topping both schools.
Alessandro Lagos Canales (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Escuela e Instituo Lincoln) swam a 49.75 to help with the one-two finish against Fredonia.
Terrazas did what he does best and that's picking up wins in the breaststroke discipline as he swam a 2:12.14 in the 200-yard breaststroke, defeating the rest of the pool by over six seconds. He then got another six-second win in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.55 as U. of Rochester's top time of 2:04.94 went to exhibition as that is how the rest of the meet ended.
"The growth and momentum of this team has been impressive as we move forward through the season," Head Coach
Brian Striker '00 said. "I think this was one of our better dual meet efforts in the past five years or so. The team has created an environment that brings out the best in each of them. We had several breakout performances and many in-season pr's. There are several things we will be working on over the next few weeks as we prepare for the invitational that will wrap up our fall semester."
The Saxons will next make preparations to compete in the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational. The three-day invitational will begin on Friday, December 3 at 5:00pm with Saturday and Sunday events beginning at 10:00am each day.
